D1 hill belongs to Dominique cluster. It is one of the five hills in the east, forming a solid shield to protect the center of Đien Bien Phu basement. The French colonialists used this fort and two other hills, D2 and D3 as the front denfene in the east. The 2nd attack by the soldiers of the 209th Regiment in 312th company of the Vietnam People's Army to the Đien Bien Phu basement was aimed at D1 hill.
On March 30, 1954, we launched the 2nd attack to the Đien Bien Phu fortification, including D1 Hill. After 3 nights and 2 days, the Vietnamese People's Army successfully controlled this basement and aimed at the Central Zone.
It can be said that victory on the east, including D1 Hill is a decisive victory that leads to the success of Đien Bien Phu campaign. In honor of the Đien Bien Phu Victory and heroic soldiers, the Government has built the Đien Bien Phu Victory Monument on the D1 hill. D1 is a historical hill, located in the centre of the city, so people can observe the entire Đien Bien Phu city and the relics.
The Đien Bien Phu victory has been over six decades, but Đien Bien Phu Victory monument is still there along with other relics of the old battlefields such as A1, C1, C2 Hill, Him Lam, Độc Lập, Bản Kéo, Mường Phăng…These historical relics are the permanent evidence of the holy Đien Bien Phu. Every day, hundreds of visitors from all over the country and the world come to the monument to show gratitude to the heroic sacrifiers, who made a splendid victory.
